New Delhi: Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khanwho is currently in jail, is apparently miffed with party chief Akhilesh Yadav and is also likely to consider quitting the party. The speculation about the possible rift came to the fore after Khan’s media in-charge Fasahat Khan alias Sanu said that the SP chief doesn’t want Khan to be released from the jail.

“Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath‘s comment was right that Akhilesh Yadav doesn’t want Azam Khan to be out (of jail). We made you and Mulayam Yadav Uttar Pradesh CM but you didn’t make Azam Khan as Leader of Opposition. You only went once to meet him in jail, ”Farsat said at a meeting at the party office in Rampur on Sunday.

Yadav, who won from Karhal in Mainpuri in his maiden Assembly contest, was appointed the Leader of Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly in March after he was unanimously elected as the leader of the SP legislature party.

Khan has been lodged in Sitapur jail since February 2020 in various cases filed against him during the Yogi Adityanath regime in Uttar Pradesh. The former Uttar Pradesh minister contested the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections from behind the bars and won the Rampur seat for the 10th time.

In February during the UP Assembly election campaign, Adityanath said that Yadav did not want the SP leader to come out of jail as it would threaten his position.

The speculation about Khan’s exit comes amid reports that Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party-Lohia (PSP-L) chief and SP chief’s uncle Shivpal Yadav is likely to snap ties with Akhilesh Yadav’s party.
