Bystander caught in crossfire outside Mt. Morris Township restaurant dies, police say

MT. MORRIS TWP., MI – Police say a bystander caught in the crossfire outside a Mt. Morris Township restaurant Saturday evening has died.

Tony Lance Owens, 36, was shot while sitting in his Jeep, which crashed into the Belle Tire building following the shooting. He was rushed to Hurley Medical Center where he later died, police said.

The other victim, 42-year-old Johntavies Jauckquece Small, died at the scene. He was found lying next to a Chevy Malibu in the parking lot of the Belle Tire, Mt. Morris Township police said.

Police were called out shortly before 11 pm Saturday, April 23, to the scene at 4418 W. Pierson Road.

Officers recovered an AR-15 rifle, two handguns, and 69 shell casings from the scene of the shooting, outside Prime Eight Ten restaurant.

Two possible shooting suspects are not in custody, police said. Video surveillance footage was obtained from nearby businesses, and detectives are trying to identify and locate the suspects.

Police previously said they believe those involved in the Saturday, April 23, shooting left the scene in a white Dodge Durango.

The investigation remains open and is ongoing.

Mt. Morris Township police were assisted at the fatal shooting scene by Michigan State Police, the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, the Flushing Police Department and Genesee Township Police Department.
