Downloads crossed 8.6 billion on the App Store worldwide with TikTok being at the top of the Download list

According to data released today by Sensor Tower, worldwide App Store downloads increased by 2.4 percent to 8.6 billion in the first quarter of 2022. (via TechCrunch). There were 36.9 billion cumulative app downloads between the App Store and the Google Play store, an increase of 1.4 percent.

Because there are significantly more Android users than iPhone users, there were far more apps downloaded on Android devices during the quarter, with Google Play downloads totaling 28.3 billion.

TikTok is one of the most popular social media platforms in the world. TikTok was the top app for worldwide downloads in Q1 2022, according to Sensor Tower’s “Q1 2022: Store Intelligence Data Digest” report. In the first quarter of 2021, the app achieved 3.5 billion total downloads, making it only the fifth app (and the only one not owned by Meta) to accomplish so.

TikTok has been downloaded over 175 million times since the beginning of the 2022

For the past nine quarters, TikTok has reached 10 million downloads, while YouTube has surpassed the same mark for eight consecutive quarters. Since the beginning of 2018, when WhatsApp had 250 million worldwide downloads, no app has had more downloads than TikTok, according to the report.

The top five applications in terms of global downloads on iPhones and iPads have been in the same order for the past three quarters. In Q1 2022, TikTok surpassed 70 million App Store downloads for the third time, thanks to an 11 percent quarter-over-quarter increase in Asia. Despite being prohibited in India, which has one of the world’s largest app install marketplaces, the app was rated third in Asia overall. It was the most popular app in the App Store, but it was only the ninth most popular on Google Play in Asia.

Each of the last four quarters, the same five apps have topped the charts in Europe. TikTok and WhatsApp ranked first and second, respectively, while Instagram dropped from third to fourth place. Even though WhatsApp has been the most popular App Store app in Europe for the previous seven quarters, TikTok has been the most popular Google Play app during the same period.

The most popular games were Subway Surfers, Wordle (the original from 2016), Coloring Match, PUBG Mobile, and Roblox. During the quarter, Subway Surfer received over 15 million downloads.

Sensor Tower’s projections cover worldwide downloads for iPhone, iPad, and Google Play from January 1 to March 31, 2022. Preinstalled apps are not included. Unique installs are reported by the company, and Android estimates exclude third-party stores. The values show the total number of app versions installed.
