THIS recent tweet of AR Rahman seems to be over Amit Shah’s Hindi push

While Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks that Hindi should be used as a communication language between States had kicked off a political row, internationally acclaimed musician AR Rahman got sucked into the debate over the Hindi ‘imposition’ row after he posted an image depicting of a symbolic Tamil woman and a slogan hailing the Dravidian language.

The Oscar award-winning music composer had posted the image on Twitter with the caption ‘Tamizhanangu’ and a slogan hailing the Tamil language.

The slogan ‘Inba Thamizh Engal Urimai Sempayirukku Vaer‘was penned by famed Tamil poet-lyricist late Bharatidasan and translates as “Delightful Tamil is the root of the staple crop of our rights.”

Although Rahman did not tweet the context for the image posted late on Friday night, the Twitterati inferred it as a symbolic retort to the Home Minister’s remarks. The image was retweeted and his quote was tweeted by over 16,600 users and attracted nearly 68,000 likes at last count on Saturday night.

Incidentally, even when he received the Oscar award for his composition in ‘Slumdog Millionaire‘years ago, Rahman had made known his love for Tamil on the world stage by saying’Ella Pugazhum Iraivanukke‘(All glory to God) in his mother tongue.

The tweet drew varied reactions with the Tamil supporters and those from other States who are opposed to Hindi imposition hailing the music director for his subtle but sharp message.

At the same time, those in favor of Hindi were critical of him claiming while he earned glory composing some famous Bollywood music, today he was opposing the same language.

Meanwhile, the opposition AIADMK in Tamil Nadu said the imposition of Hindi was unacceptable and people may learn it of their own volition. Former Chief Minister and AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam said the party stood firmly on the two language policy of the state, which was Tamil and English.
